It's odd that these vehicles make up a large portion of sales in Europe that is supposedly far more environmentally aware than the U.S.
Actually its not odd at all, Europe lags about 4-5 years on emissions testing from the US, primarily due to California. Europe on the other hand led the charge for lead free electronics.
And Europe is going to be greatly concerned about this as this is a area where they've felt that it would save lives to limit the specific emissions that VW cheated on.

3 cyl diesels are far, far, far ,far more efficient than 8 cyl SUV's. Peugeot has a diesel Hybrid. It can't be brought here.
Once again domestic manufacturers lag overseas automotive industries. Ginning up test results is the American way. Shame on you Ford & GM for the weak effort (although GM has raised the bar as far as outright killing people) USA USA !!!!

More like an attempt to hold VW to the same rules others are playing by. It's one thing to debate whether or not we need a stricter standard than Europe for tailpipe emissions. It's another for a manufacturer to purposely circumvent our emissions standards. The industry pretty much all reached the same conclusion: Diesel cars that meet US emissions standards aren't financially viable at the sub $30k price point. Most reacted by not selling anything. GM reacted by selling (a few) diesel Cruzes at a loss. Mazda is 2 years behind schedule, with no launch date in sight, with launching their new Skyactive diesel here because they can't yet meet cost, performance, and durability objectives within the confines of the EPA standards. VW, on the on the other hand, basically just said "F-it" and sold cars they knew didn't meet the emission standards.
There's no debate, VW has admitted they did this. Because they have "confessed," they will get to continue to sell diesels in this market. Just not sure how many people are going to want them now. Which is a shame, because the 2016s will be compliant.
Our useless federal government never passes on a chance to extort money out of a productive business. I could perhaps give the EPA a little credibility if they fined the EPA administrators and workers personally for dumping the chemicals in the Animas River.

Others have not entered the market becsue it's difficult to overcome the emissions requirements, VW did it by cheating.
