Despite the fraud, I do think the fine is totally exaggerated. Maybe they meant millions instead of billions Or the fine is politically motivated in order to get rid of a competitor, I mean, what's left of VW after paying 160 billion?!

This is going to be one ginormous penalty.

Then there is also going to be the civil class action suit for all the people no longer getting the gas mileage they thought once the recall changes their software.
Yep.

Anyone remember the woman from California who successfully sued Honda because her Civic didn't get anywhere near the advertised gas mileage? She ultimately lost on appeal, but the damage to Honda was done at that point. Other's filed suit with varying success.

If VW survives this penalty, I will be amazed.

Where did the 160 billion figure come from? Just read that it is "only" 16 billion...
The German government does not seem to help VW, to the contrary they have announced investigations to find out if VW also cheated on the European market.

BMW's still a European brand. Many "Asian" cars are made here but; they're still "Japanese" or "Korean" brands.

It just shows you how stupid the Germans think out government is. And I can't say that I disagree with them.

Why? They did find out, so who's stupid now?

Seems it has to do with Diesel cars only. Those are not nearly as common in the US as they are in Europe. Maybe the emissions standards for Diesel cars are very strict in the US and VW doesn't know how to fulfill them. Maybe Detroit doesn't, either.

The EPA standards were developed by idiots with no knowledge of engineering or the car industry. Diesels are "cleaner" than gas engines in many emissions, especially CO2. Yet the high compression and engine efficiency leads to slightly higher NOx emissions. European countries aren't run by idiots and write their regulations knowing this. Ours were written by people that have no idea how diesels work, and we hold diesels to identical standards as gassers.

Was this a Saab on a GM platform?

I had a 1975 SAAB.

It only had two defects, front wheel bearings and radiator leakage.

It was the most advanced car on the planet in 1975.

There was a reason for it being known as the "smart car".

It took decades for the other manufacturers to concede to its excellence, but when they finally did, they botched it.

It was too smart for Americans, and a threat to Germans.
