1. I don't think there are any exclusively Asian communities. There isn't a large Asian population there anyway.

2. Not that I can think of. The grocery stores in Waldorf are you basic Giant, Safeway, Food Lion, and Shoppers. Specialty stores are very infrequent in that part of MD.

3. Commuter buses. They are nice because you don't have to drive, but you will still get stuck in traffic though.

4. The rent in Waldorf is ridiculously expensive considering how far away it is from the city. I don't know about a fully furnished apartment, but a unfurnished 1 bedroom apartment generally goes for $1000+. So take that for what it's worth.

5. I have heard city officials talking about building an expressway through Waldorf similar to how Clinton has Route 5, but the problem is Waldorf is too developed, there is little space to build such a road and many businesses have complained about having an expressway would take away from their business. And given the way the state has struggled for funding for transportation projects, I doubt any major construction will happen down there in the next 20 years. The state is struggling and there are other projects that have been planned longer that are still on the table (Purple Line).

Just based on what you're asking, if all those things are important to you and you have a little money to spare, Fairfax County might be up your alley. Fairfax has a large Asian population, a lot of Asian grocery stores, great transportation, predominantly Asian communities, but it is much more expensive. What is your price range and where will you be working?

Information on commuter busses between DC and SoMD is here Commuter Bus (http://mta.maryland.gov/services/commuterbus/ - broken link)
The various "900 series" routes serve the Waldorf area. They are comfortable, with plush reclining seats.

There is no direct public transportation between Waldorf and Virginia, although many tens of thousands of workers commute to NoVA from PG and Charles counties. For years, Metrobus used to operate a route between Oxon Hill and Alexandria/Pentagon, but it was finally discontinued as it ran practically empty.

Information about the 3-County southern MD area is here Southern Maryland Online™ - Your on-line community for Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's Counties.™ and Life in Southern Maryland - Southern Maryland Community Forums however that website concentrates more on St. Mary's County, and many of the chat posters put down/ make fun of Waldorf.

The largest Asian group in southern Prince Georges, are Filipino's. They have several bars/restaurants, a cultural center, and an ethnic nursing home in the Oxon Hill and Fort Washington, MD communities, and are huge supporters of Catholic churches there. David Valderrama was a judge and state delegate. Some Filipino's have migrated into the Waldorf area, and I believe there is an Asian market in Old Waldorf. Several Vietnamese households are in Indian Head, MD.

There are also several Indian physicians locally, whose children have excelled in Charles County area schools. For 14 years, there has also been a Moslem mosque in downtown LaPlata, MD. Jay Bala (a Sri Lankan), and Hamad Matin (a 2nd-generation Pakistani attorney), both ran for political office in the 2010 election in Charles County.

I thought about living in fairfax, but like many others, my work place will be at Andrews airforce base and fairfax is kinda pricey for me.

why would people make fun of waldorf though? if you were to live in it, any good/positive things about waldorf at all

I will be traveling from waldorf to afb most frequently. If I were to hang out, I would rather go up to fairfax/dc/montgomery where most of my friends are located. So I was just wondering if there's better way to commute to save gas/time.

Perhaps because Waldorf has a gotten a reputation for having a bit crime. It really isn't that bad, but it's not as safe as it used to be which is understandable given how much it has grown.

I understand you dilemma as far as Fairfax. It is very pricey but I will also mention that Waldorf is a horrible commute. It is one of those one way in one way out type places so it gets very congested during rush hour. I would strongly discourage anyone to move there that doesn't like to travel a long time to work, but if price is your priority then yes Waldorf is a location.

But just a quick question what is your price range? Depending on what you say there are place in Fairfax like the Alexandria and Annandale that has a sizable Asian population and some affordable places to live but it just depends on what you would desire as far as price.
