I know of an elderly couple who currently live in the Twinbrook area of Rockville near Veirs Mill. They've lived in that same house for 45+ years but they grew up in Bethesda and Potomac. She graduated from BCC in 1954 when it was still a small school. One of her Children live in Westminster.

I met a number of them in North Carolina.

Was it a decision of government to bring in large numbers of apartments and so called affordable housing, a crashing economy, or what? The luster is off the rose in Montgomery. Don't you think?

Montgomery County is rated the 13th wealthiest county in the U.S. And if you think that is bad or downhill, consider the that there are 3,143 counties in the America. Percentage-wise, that places Montgomery County in a rather significant number.

I didn't remember the name the other day, but now I do. It was one of two Sunshine House surf shops -- the other was in OC. Google tells me the original OC Sunshine House is no longer a surf shop.

Somebody has repro Sunshine House t-shirts online. This was the basic model:

The Sunshine House Indian Logo T-Shirt: Men's XXL Navy

More info about the Bethesda location(s). I do remember the free-standing store.

gwadzilla: Bethesda Sunshine House... a piece of B-Town Culture

For anyone who remembers ....

SURF NAKED!

Default Only a small elite are rich now

While a small elite part of the MONTGOMERY COUNTY population is rich which gives a false impression of wealth for the population as a whole an ever increasing number of people are now poor. Here are some interesting statisitics from a website:

MONTGOMERY COUNTY TRENDS:

§ An estimated 6.7 percent of Montgomery County’s population, 64,607 residents, lived in poverty in 2009, marking the highest poverty rate in two decades.
§ Between 2008 and 2009, 10,000 more residents were living in poverty, a19-percent increase
§ The 2009 poverty rate in Montgomery County at 6.7 percent is well below Maryland’s 9.2 percent, although Montgomery County’s gains account for 17 percent of the state increase between 2007 and 2009.
§ Montgomery County is among 453 counties that had a statistically significant increase in poverty between 2007 and 2009; one out of every seven U.S. Counties experienced an increase in poverty.

Keep in mind also that back in those days Ocean City was truly a ghost down outside of the tourist season. It probably made sense for the owner to have other locations to sell stuff where the money was in the winter.

But Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties aren't that far either! But then again, there are some unique businesses here (mostly clothing).

Skateboarding is quite big here, especially in Bethesda with all the HSers. A store like that
