I'm new to the montgomery county area, and have been living in germantown. I was recently made abreast of a conversation where an individual was offended that someone thought they lived in "Germantown" in lieu of Gaithersburg. Am i missing something, or does Germantown really have such a bad connotation?

I don't think people have a negative feeling toward Germantown compared to Gaithersburg. Gaithersburg has more amenities like restaurants and shopping but other than that I don't know.

Meh.. don't take it seriously. I've noticed that funny enough, people like to put down cities that are to the north of them if they live in the 270 corridor. Gaithersburg residents don't want to be associated with Germantown, Rockville residents don't want to be associated with Gaithersburg, North Bethesda residents with Rockville, Bethesda with North Bethesda, etc. All of these are great places to live, but I think people just think that the closer you are to DC, the cooler you are.

It shouldn't matter anyways, just make sure you can find a place to raise your kids (if you have any) with good schools and its done.

Hello. I am a Pocono area and looking to make a move to MD within the next year or so. I am somewhat (actually a little bit) familiar with the College Park area and like it. However, I've only ventured out just a tad bit. I am looking into relocate to a very good, secure and reasonably priced MD rental community and have been researching areas such as Silver Springs, Bethesda, Gaithersburg and Germantown. I've driven thru an area of Germantown while dropping someone off home. However, that is the extent of my Germantown visit. Could anyone please tell me which of these areas are best to live for safety, security, cleanliness, a decent commute to/from DC area and reasonable costs? Thanks!

The further you are from the center of DC, the less expensive it will be, and the longer the commute will be. Germantown is the furthest out, Gaithersburg is somewhat closer. Bethesda and Downtown Silver Spring are the most expensive and the closest. You just have to decide on your budget and how close you can afford to be. My feeling is that Germantown and Bethesda are extremely safe.

Nothing in the DC area is "reasonably priced" according to the standards of other states. What is the rent you are hoping to pay?

Germantown will be the least expensive, Bethesda by far the most. It all depends on your budget. If you can afford Rockville, that's a good option - less expensive than Bethesda but still a lot going on. I don't like Silver Spring as much but it has very nice sections and not so nice sections. It's also on the red line, but on the other end of the Rockville/Shady Grove line, and it has fewer stops to downtown, so the ride from SS is much faster than it is from Rockville.

What about Montgomery Village? How does it fit into that list?
