The information about the proposed location of the Lidl grocery is now available on the City's web site under Planning's January news update. The location is 8601 Baltimore Ave., the current site of the Clarion Inn. The site is 3.3 acres, but to the north is an approximately 40 foot wide swath of land (about 16,000 square feet) that is a city paper street (4700 block of Ruatan Street and also adjacent to the north east portion of the property is about 16,600 square feet of undeveloped property that is owned by the University's College Park Foundation.

I went to the link below, did not find any heading, or sub heading titled "January news update". Don't want to spend further time searching. Could you please link directly?

It is closer to campus, but not close enough. That location is still a mile from College Ave which would be considered the center of everything. It is a great location for those that live in University View, The Varsity, and the Enclave, but the bulk of student housing would be closer to the new Whole Foods (Historic dorms, The Commons, Landmark, and Terrapin Row) than where Lidl will be. Whole Foods beats Lidl by one tenth of a mile to College Ave.

On a scale of 1 to 10 for location for UMD, I'd give it a 7.

I'll add that I am happy that College Park is losing one of its inns. And maybe The Enclave will finally get some retail being practically across the street from a grocery store.

Why are you happy that CP is losing one of its inns?

Because that allows more room for more modern hotels like Cambria Suites. Trust me, there are plenty more inns in College Park to choose from. Losing one won't make a dent. Currently there are about 4 old style motor-inn type hotels in College Park. These are the kind you see on Rt. 301 headed south in VA when there were no I-95 or 495 interstates. It is 2016 and College Park is home to a major university and next to one of the most expensive cities to live in the country. Don't you think it is time for a change?

Now I'm not saying every hotel needs to be luxury or even mid-level, but the motor-inn style doesn't fit inside the Beltway on a major artery into DC anymore. The transformation of those style hotels are about 30 years overdue in a city like College Park.

Besides, they are perfect for crimes such as prostitution which College Park had to deal with a few years back.

The property owner for the Clarion Inn also owns the Quality Inn in downtown College Park. With all of the hotel development coming to College Park, he has been looking for redevelopment of the property for another use for several years.
