“ Peraton Inc., a national security contracting and tech company, is moving part of its operation from a Metro-accessible site in McLean to Bowie.

The privately held company, one of Greater Washington largest employers, has inked a lease for a little over 18,000 square feet at 16901 Melford Blvd., an office building that’s part of St. John Properties Inc.'s and its partners' mixed-use Melford Town Center. By December, Peraton will move its Global Health & Financial Solutions division headquarters from its current office in McLean to the new Maryland site.”

“Peraton is exactly the type of company that Prince George’s County has targeted in its new Economic Development Strategic Plan, and we foresee significant growth in the cyber/IT sector,” David Iannucci, president and CEO of the Prince George's County Economic Development Corporation, said in an email.

Hmmmm. Sounds like cheaper rents in a non-metro accessible office in Prince George's. Good for Bowie and Bowie State U.

Looks like a lot of space for just 70 employees...

Good for Bowie, and my guess is much cheaper rent (The current location is near Tysons which is, well, not cheap). Those 70 peeps that probably live in NoVA right now faced a long commute, though.

When leasing new space you are leasing for not just cheaper rent, but you may also be leasing for more space with room to grow. Or else every two years you'll be looking for more space in yet another location. Hopefully they can grow in this new space for at least 5 years.

Definitely true. Just looking up Peraton though they have offices all over the metro area. Perhaps they'll move even more operation to Bowie later?

It's not the whole building in the picture, if that's what's confusing you. 18K sqft is less than half of one floor.

Of course it's cheaper rents. That's not a negative thing for PGC.

Ouch, leaving a Metro accessible location. Not a great look for any company, it’s too bad they couldn’t find a space on a Metro line somewhere in the county. Would have made a nice addition to TOD at College Park, New Carrollton, Largo, Branch Ave, etc.

Peraton has tons and tons of location all throughout DMV...

Even in just PGC they've multiple locations in Greenbelt, then one at Beltsville area. Further up I-95 they've office near Annapolis Junction (NSA is right there and Peraton is a IT/Security Analyst company). In VA their main offices are not in McLean but in Reston and Herndon (like pretty much all the IT/Comm/Security/etc. companies) anyway with their HQ in Herndon.

tl;dr: It's basically moving one office to another location...most likely due to lease expiration and maybe they just need more space. And TBH it's not a big loss for most people just b/c an office is no longer near Metro...
