Unfortunately I live in Germantown as well and we are facing the same exact problems. The worst of it is, it's next to impossible to get out of here! Rockville is a wonderful suggestion by many but much more expensive. Unfortunately we have lost so many neighbors because they finally decided to leave the area feeling there was no local option for relocation.

I hope you are able to find something. I'm definitely going to follow this post to see if there are any suggestions.

Default Don't like this area at all anymore

I've lived in Mont Co on and off since 1980 and permanantly since 1990.
It has grown to much, it is to cluttered, traffic is getting worse and worse and the cost of living around here is horrible for lower and middle income families.

I'm looking to move out of state.... There HAS to be better somewhere else.

JMO

Good luck

I'm shocked all these people from Germantown find it so dangerous, I still think of it as a small country town but its had astronomical growth the last 10 years. I haven't been there in years so I will take your word for it. There are lots of safe areas in Rockville. Silver Spring and Wheaton shouldn't be taken to be dangerous as a whole, the Kemp Mill area of Wheaton is very safe and nice, its a wealthy Jewish enclave. Outer Silver Spring is very safe like parts of Aspen Hill, Rossmoor, the good areas of White Oak and Colesville.

Olney would still be my #1 place to move in Moco if I had a family tho, there is a ton of development and new commercial stuff there just in recent years.

Just stay away from any of the low income apt or townhouse communities (lot's of low income folks rent townhouses and cram people in). Sorry to be blunt. Low income = lesser values on family and education...which in turn leads to kids running amuck...petty crimes, graffiti, bullying, etc..
That's just the way it is. It's not only like this in MoCo or PG,,,, but all over the country.

I agree about Olney. It's safe, higher income and has good schools from what I hear. Wish there was a metro stop there.

Bethesda's a good spot too. Anyone who says it's unsafe probably grew up on a private island that had zero crime because their family were the only inhabitants.

I lived in the White Oak area of Silver Spring and I now own a home in Burtonsville, MD. I do not have children so I don't have a lot of the same issues as people with children do.

My husband and I both work in WDC, and it takes us about 35 minutes to get to work in the morning (we leave at 6 a.m) and about 45 minutes to get home in the evening. We leave work at 3:30.

I have been fortunate because I do know that there is crime everywhere, but I have not experienced any. I live in the Greencastle Lakes area and I take walks (during the day) and I have never been bothered (except by some curious geese by one of the lakes).

Burtonsville is a very quiet, little burg. If you want someplace to eat, a bookstore, or you want to go to the movies, you need to go into downtown Silver Spring, which, by the way, has been revitalized. It is no longer the depressing, 1950's looking town it used to be. If you want to purchase a home anywhere near downtown Silver Spring, get ready to shell out some big bucks - $450,000 and up.

Being from rural Southwestern, PA, I still have not gotten over the cost of homes in this area. For what we paid for our home, I could have a McMansion (which I am not interested in) with land in Southwestern, PA.

Just wanted to add my two cents.
I'm interested in the Greencastle Lakes area in Burtsonville. Do you still feel Greencastle Lakes is a decent and safe area?
