Residents of Bellingham, Wash., are fed up with Canadian shoppers who cross the border and buy up the goods at the local Costco.

Canadian residents are driving less than 30 miles across the U.S. border and taking full advantage of the favorable exchange rate when buying food, gas and other items. Right now, Canada's dollar is much stronger than the U.S.'s. Gas is more than a buck less in the U.S., and milk is nearly $5 a gallon less.

Those people didn't complain back when the exchange rate was the opposite back in the 90's, and they flocked to Victoria and Vancouver for cheap vacations. They could always drive down I5 25 miles and go to the Burlington Costco.

I do remember one of the complaints that the Bellingham residents have were that the Candadians were tossing out the boxes, tags and some bags out (basically littering) all over the place. The Canadians are suppose to be declaring them at the borders (and presumably pay surcharge tax? I don't know)... and of course you have those who are looking to get around on the system. LOL.

I thought Bellingham was a liberal, tolerant, diverse town accepting of other cultures and nationalities??

It sounds like the only true part of my sentence is liberal.

Bellingham has a wide variety of people. There are plenty of people here who are liberal, tolerant, and accepting of other cultures. There are also plenty who are none of those things, and plenty who are some of those things but not all. I doubt you'll ever find a town that's entirely free of jackasses, unfortunately.

Also note that Bellingham residents and Canadians aren't the only ones shopping at that Costco, but plenty of other people from Whatcom county do as well. Some of the people complaining may not even be residents of Bellingham, although I imagine most are.

Regardless, I avoid that area anyway. I'd rather spend a little more at the grocery store within walking distance of my apartment. Much more pleasant and much more convenient.

There is a big difference between tolerance of people from other cultures and being severely inconvenienced by people taking advantage. Political leanings make no difference to shoppers
that can't find a parking space and have to wait in long checkout lines.

Thank you!!! For years we in eastern Washington have been complaining to the politicians about illegal immigration and the 40% of our property taxes going to illegal services, hospitals closing because they MUST provide medical care for FREE, gang violence, random shootings and murders, and on it goes.

For that we were called racists and intolerant of other people.

NOW I understand, we should have just mentioned the LONG SHOPPING LINES and NOT BEING ABLE TO FIND A PARKING PLACE.

I am sure that Senators Murray and Cantwell will see the light now!! Even Gregoire will probably understand now that it is put into terms that western Washington residents can understand.

Thanks again......our letters are going out TODAY!!!

This post is the best one I've read in a while. Totally agree, 509.
