What's your YTD rain? At 417mm (though I do suspect the unofficial site of underreading a little) we're struggling to get out of semi-arid territory for the year. Feels odd.
This is ours:
Jan 70.9 mm
Feb 88.1 mm
Mar 135.4 mm
Apr 137.7 mm
May 108.0 mm
Jun 148.3 mm
Jul 46.0 mm
Aug 255.3 mm
Sep 231.1 mm
Total 1221 mm
Wet enough? Don't have October yet, but it's definitely less than August or September.
While we're on the subject of rain, Christchurch received a major dousing recently: 49 mm, just a few mm shy of our average monthly total. It literally rained all day. Add a high in the single digits (< 50 F) and strong winds and you've got a very unhappy Chester.
I was looking forward to the sunny 23 C / 73 F forecast for yesterday, but I wasn't surprised when we ended up with a mere 15 C / 59 F and overcast all day. See, our forecasters love to play such cruel jokes on us.
Today is more of the same, as is tomorrow, and the day after that, and...

May as well get it all over with this month. Although the latter part of the month is looking brighter than than the start was, NZ has so far had an unusually cloudy October, with 80-85% of the country also wetter than average. Most of the North Island has been a little warmer than average, but 90% of the SI has been cooler, though only about 15% of it by more than 1.0C.
Locally, the sun tally is catching up a bit but should still end up well short of the mean (the period 1-15 was the cloudiest since at least 1953 - daily Kelburn sun data earlier than that are not yet available at NIWA, and the last cloudier start may have been much older).
Until a few days ago Sydney was reported as having had a very cool October.
A real cold feel to the weather now in NW England. Every day between now and early April which reaches 50°F is to be considered a bonus! (and counted on the fingers of one hand)

Although I saw Dunedin had 21 C yesterday! Central Otago and Marlborough-Tasman areas seem to be the only ones doing well right now.
I'd say October's a wash at this stage but I'm looking forward to a warm and sunny November. Fingers crossed!

Marlborough-Tasman are doing OK, but will still end up way short of the average October sun. But of course records were set for the previous 3-month period, esp. Aug-Sept.
I think November will start the correction, but it may be December before temps. get properly into above normal territory. No science in this guess of course.
Spring is better for bigger ranges normally. May 2010 gave us a range of -0.8°C - 26.6°C.
October 2011 gave us 0.8°C to 24.7°C. Still good for the time of year though. Some Octobers have given a range of barely more than 15°C.
