Last winter for the most part was very mild here & I didn't record my first frost until February, when we had a 10 day cold snap. We didn't get any snow at all though. My last frost was also recorded in February!

impressive. Our nights average below freezing in the winter, but our only two sizeable snowstorms were at the end of October and the beginning of March last season. Odd pattern.

We only record a few sub zero nights in an average winter, with the first usually around Christmas time.
We don't get severe frosts though, even during the last few cold winter I only recorded as low as -2.5C & locally it only dropped to -4.9C at a weather station a couple of miles away...

The average minimums during December/January/February in Portsmouth are 6.0C/5.2C/4.4C respectively (Figures are from the now closed Met Office weather station at Southsea) but my own minimums average a little higher as I'm located in a more built up area than where the weather station used to be. The record low from that weather station is -8.0C (from 1890-2006).

Wow.. that is really mild! I am never living in Portsmouth.

I guess it is certainly the mildest city in the UK.

Obviously he lives in a tropical paradise. I mean a few frosts a year? What?

It's freezing here right now and it's the 1st November. We've already had 5 air frosts or so. I don't know where this few air frosts is coming from.

Again there is snow down to 500m

he says he only recorded -2.5c min in 2010 (it was -2c here a week or so ago), again I have to question that because I recorded a MAX of -9c on 23rd of December 2010.

Wherever he lives it sounds awful.

Just to clarify are you actually saying that your minimum temperature i.e coldest in 2010 was only -2.5c!

That is amazing!

No, still live in a cool temperate maritime climate Many parts of the south coast of England, & other sheltered spots like central London, only receive a handful of sub zero temperatures each winter. Portsmouth is situated on an island (Portsea Island) & is the most densely populated city in the UK (even over London). Lowest I have recorded so far this season is 3.3C, like I said I wouldn't normally expect to see a below zero temp until around Christmas time here, or at the very earliest late November/early December...

And yes I did only record -2.5C in December 2010 (& locally it dropped to -4.9C) my lowest daytime maximum was 1C, I have not recorded a single 'ice day' since living here in 2001. Don't forget that the cold spell in northern Ireland was record breaking! So hardly surprising it was so much colder there!

Why does it sound awful?? Yes I suppose if you love freezing cold weather & lots of snow it is awful, but for many the climate on this part of the south coast is ideal. We get mild winters & being in the south east fairly warm summers (for the UK), it is also the sunniest part of the UK...Some would say it is the perfect climate (again for the UK)

And just to show how mild it really is down here, we have fruiting Canary Island Date palms planted near the seafront, these are zone 9b palms...
