I was under the impression that a couple frosts would speed up the process and save some of a possible stunted fall foliage. But apparently cold, but slightly above and sunny days are the best recipe.

Anyway, this year will not be spectacular as we've been too dry.

Also, as early autumn freezes almost always occur under radiational conditions, even if it dips below zero 2 meters above the ground, the canopy level might be frost-free, at least in the case of light freezes? Here when the first freeze occurs in October, it does nothing to the colors. The cool weather that goes with it actually enhances them. But it doesn't dip below -2°C then.

It probably explains why we had decent foliage last year with plenty of reds - October was quite cold, with cool nights, averaging around 4C, but it didn't fall below freezing once, and it was slightly sunnier than average.

We'll see how the situation develops. We've had three freezes, -1.1, -1.7 and -4.0. No new ones in sight, and things will proceed rapidly this time of the year. Some rain would do good. The foliage is so unevenly distributed yet, as seen in my pictures from Sep 30.

Smaller vegetation looks good:

But trees are still some green, some yellowish, some have even some red:

If it doesn't rain this weekend, I'm going to hit the saddle and look how things are proceeding.

Don't forget Valletta, Lisbon and Nicosia. In the case of Valletta, they've never had a freeze
