Why do the beaches in this area have pebbles instead of sand? That'd be a bummer to walk on barefoot. Even the Great Lakes have sandy beaches, albeit mixed in with rocks in places.

Also, how warm does the water get at the peak of summer (Aug)? Bet it's nowhere close to the 27 C waters I swam in at the North Carolina beach I went to the week before last.

I'm not so sure why.. I have been to beaches near Brighton that are sandy, so it may be to stop coastal erosion/protect the town? Bournemouth to the west has some lovely beaches, though. I generally find it too chilly to swim until July/August in the UK. Sea temperatures in the English Channel are only about 19C at their highest, but by the shore it can reach 21-22C. I remember during August 2003 when we had a heatwave, I went down to the sea and it was literally steaming, visibility was so poor and the water was very warm.. I don't know what the temperature was like by the shore but it must have been above 22C as it felt warmer than beaches I have been to in the Mediterranean.

Nice! Do people do sledding there in the winter?

Shoreline temps on the Mediterranean are well above 22C in the summer, especially by August. The shores are above that now

I'm sure people do. I've never been to the Dunes in the winter. Maybe I will.

There is so much sand in the Indiana Dunes area of Lake Michigan that it actually resembles a desert

Beaches on the west side of the lake aren't as nice, but the backdrop to Chicago's skyline is very picturesque
