East to west climate continuum of Sydney (notice how the nights are getting cooler with lower records):

We need to express our numbers in terms of degrees/km so that we can make easy comparisons. Here is one:
Chilanko Forks vs. Tatlayoko Lake. The elevation is almost the same, and the distance is 50 km apart. The temperature differences by month:
Jan = 0.14 degrees C/km
Feb = 0.1 degrees C/km
Mar = 0.06 degrees C/km
Apr = 0.15 degrees C/km
May = 0.01 degrees C/km
Jun = 0 degrees C/km
Jul = -0.01 degrees C/km
Aug = 0 degrees C/km
Sep = 0.01 degrees C/km
Oct = 0.03 degrees C/km
Nov = 0.07 degrees C/km
Dec = 0.11 degrees C/km
YEAR = 0.05 degrees C/km

It's not really comparable to California, but there's often a stark contrast in winter between the Ligurian sea coast of Italy, renowned for its mild winter climate, and the Po plains on the other side of the mountains which are regarded as being cold and foggy (probably the coldest spots in Italy for their elevation). The contrast is most evident in the Genoa area where the watershed is particularly close to the sea. The coast averages 7°-11° in Jan while the plains average 0°-2°.
In some cases the differences are even more noticeable when a northerly wind called "Tramontana scura" blows on Genoa through the mountain passes, bringing snow and heavy winds only to those city neighbourhoods directly exposed to it, namely those where there are no hills blocking the air from the north. This means that some neighbourhoods receive heavy snow with freezing temps while others more protected just a couple of miles west or east remain sunny and mild.
Driving through the area in winter seems to be quite funny.
Random example with places approx. at the same elevation, Jan 24th, 2009:
mild neighbourhood on the sea 5,6°/10,7°
city center (6-7 km away, still on the sea) 3,3°/10,8°
inland neighbourhood (some 8-9 km away from the center) 1,0°/5,8°
town on the northern side of the mountains (40 km from the center) -1,6°/0,4°
