Certainly cold, but "brutal"? Come on. 24 F is not exactly life-threatening and very managable. It's like me saying an 85 F summer is brutally hot...lol
You have to wrap yourself in five layers for temps in the 20s and 30s? That's concerning. At 20 F, all I need is a t-shirt, hoodie and longjohns and a skully if it's windy. You sound way over dramatic. And you know the largest obesity rates are in the South right?

You make Upstate NY seem like it's Nunavut I went to Upstate NY in January 2004 during one of their most brutal cold snaps (actually brutal, with lows in the -30s ) and I enjoyed every minute of it. If I can enjoy pretty much the worst Upstate NY can throw at me, I'm sure I'll enjoy the whole winter. Actually, I find that Upstate NY gets way too many thaws during winter.
Don't forget too that those temperatures can feel a lot colder if it is windy... Even some winter days in the UK can feel "brutally" cold because of the windchill, my Mum calls winds like that a "lazy wind" as it goes right through you

24 °F is fine, it feels cold but it's not bad.

It's the winter overall that's cold, not just that temp. There are even highs below 5 °F. And remember, life doesn't shut down, you still have to go to (either) school or work, so those temperatures below 0 °F are going to be felt. It's not like you can stay inside 24/7.

I wouldn't stay inside 24/7 when the average high is 29 F LOL......I'm not a whiny baby. I go outside regardless of temps. How many times will I have to explain that to you? I swear I have like a million times.
For every high below 5 F there's also highs above 40 F. Funny how you don't mention that.

If you like Upstate NY I would just recommend Montreal for you. It's even colder but with better food and free Healthcare and activities that don't involve getting wasted and hooking up with weird Townies
