It was just slushy snow.. not compacted/frozen so really no excuse.

IMO there is no such thing as "normal conditions" (ie conditions similar to summer) in the winter months and so your driving needs to be adjusted during the entire season.

Maybe there? I'd say much of the winter has similar conditions to summer; as in dry roads free of ice.
