I also feel like BMI has the ideal weights set too low. I'm 6' tall, they say the ideal weight for me is 137-184 lbs. They say "overweight" is 184-221 lbs and "obese" is 221-294 lbs. That 137-184 figure is based on a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 which is what they call "healthy weight".
My actual weight is 231 lbs. That's 31.3, or "obese", apparently. Funny I don't look or feel obese. I would say I should lose a few pounds.
I can't imagine weighing 137, I would feel terrible being that small. Even 160s would be less than ideal. A BMI under 20 is definitely underweight in my opinion, and overweight doesn't start until 30. They used to have the "overweight" line at 28, that puts my ideal weight as high as 206. 28 seems like a good cut-off. I also read somewhere that people with BMIs in the mid-high 20s had a lower health risk than those in the "healthy weight" range.
I don't care what the charts say, it's healthier to be 6' and 200 lbs than 6' and 149.999999999999 lbs. If I could pick one weight and stick with it, it would be 200 pounds.

230 pounds is really heavy and overweight. I was 190 pounds a year ago and my stomach was stuck out like a ballon.
I agree with you on the BMI though, the figures they suggest would have you being malnourished!

For me, a lot of people with a BMI around 25-29 certainly look overweight, and yet there are some who look really normal with a BMI of 19 and even 18. I'm guessing it depends on your height or body fat distribution. Since this is a "fat" world, I can see why people with a BMI of 18 or 19 would seem underweight to you, when they're still within the healthy range.
With that being said, BMI calculators are hardly that accurate. They make taller and muscular people seem fatter than they are, and shorter people skinnier than what they are. It's really a faulty system.
I personally this alternative BMI calculator (try it yourself):
BMI is complete horse****. Whether someone is overweight or not is not only based off height/weight. I'm 6'1" and 220 pounds which according to the BMI scale is very overweight and I'm not fat in the least, I exercise/workout a whole lot and most people guess my weight at about 170-180. My body fat % is about 16-17%, so while I'm not shredded with abs, I'm quite muscular and don't have a belly at all.
Honestly, if you're 6 feet tall and 190 pounds and you're really fat, you probably just have a poor body distribution, no offense. Turn that fat into some muscle, you don't really even need to lose weight. 190 pounds is very healthy for being 6 feet tall.
