Wasn't 1976 a notoriously good summer? I wonder if any major films were made that year. It would be fun to watch to see just how nice that summer was.
The first Star Wars movie was filmed mostly in England during the summer of 1976, the desert scenes were actually filmed in Essex
But seriously, it's unfortunate that it was almost entirely filmed indoors, so we didn't get to see the weather. On YouTube there's an old interview with Mark Hamill, who's from California and even he was commenting on how hot it felt.
1976 was the warmest summer on record with average highs above 25c, above average sun, and below average rainfall in all 3 summer months. Minima were nothing special though.
You and George seem to believe the same thing for both the eastern US and the UK this summer. Why? Are we supposed to have a negative NAO all summer? Negative AO? What do you think will drive this?
Not sure if the NAO will be more negative this summer.... The AO doesn't matter much in the summer especially the farther south you are.
My concern is the wet soils in the Midwest this spring makes it more difficult to see long duration heatwaves, and the moisture is fed back into the atmosphere causing convection then cooling.
The notoriously cool summer of 2009 also was preceded by a very wet spring
It could still get hot, but we would need to see a pattern change. Particularly with SST's off the Baja Peninsula. When there are above normal, the jet is aimed at the Midwest during the summer which means it will stay wet. When the waters are cooler than normal it indicated dryness for the Midwest.
A bit of good news is that the waters are indeed cooling lately off the coast of the Baja
I have noticed the sun hours are really understated, but how understated? 25 hours?
They've been accurate for here, we've only seen like 3-4 hrs per day on average, when we should be seeing double that in May.
This is a shocking month.
