So I am suppose to start my new job at Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge on the 19th, and I still don't have a place to stay!
I'm looking for a short term lease or month-to-month (I'm going to be there approximately 6 months) on a small efficiency, one bedroom, or something similar in the Davis/Thomas/Parsons (maybe as far as Elkins) area.
If anyone has any places, or knows of any (if you happen to see something), I would REALLY appreciate leads.
Did you check out the site ..VRBO® is Vacation Rentals by Owner® Vacation Homes Rentals by Owner (http://www.vrbo.com - broken link). Maybe one of these home owners will be willing to rent to you at a monthly rate vs the weekly vacation rental rate.
Out of left field...but one of the camp grounds might have a client who would let you rent a camping trailer for that time period. Most camp grounds have shower and laundry facilities...should cost about $5 per night...our loft in Thomas is taken, by the way...
In Canada this same thing is done and the survey people live in tents...pretty hardy lot to endure those rigors of camp life...they move out in September when the snows begin.
Call MTN Top Realty @ 800-624-4341 they handle many of the vacation rentals there. When we were looking to buy a condo there a couple yrs ago we worked with them and they KNOW alot about what goes on in that area.
I would suggest for you to take a day or two off, and drive to Canaan or Elkins. Stop by some realtors, if you need some names of reputable realtors just let me know. You could also just drive around and look for yards that have "for rent" signs on them. I think I mentioned this in a previous post somewhere. There are a conglomeration of new apartment buildings built off 11th street in Elkins on Cole Avenue. Check from Cole Avenue to 12th Street South, and Cole to 13th Street. I'm sure there is something there you could find in your price range. Anything you rent in the Canaan Valley area is probably going to be more expensive than living in Elkins. You will have more convenience though, with more stores, shopping, etc. But you will have about a 40 minute drive to Canaan Valley. There might be some places in the Harman area you might like, but I have no way of finding out about these places.
There are several campgrounds around Harmon and I see campers that are not used at all....but someone in Thomas/Davis has to have a cheap seat for you and your gear...you will have to prospect the area on foot as GHO suggests...
Well, I've been talking to Randy at Davis Realty, and he found a place on the 3rd floor of the bank building, available the beginning of June. $400 including utilities, furnished. Which doesn't sound like a bad deal to me. Anyone familiar with the building? Or the guy who rents it out?
I was also informed by a coworker that I can stay in one of the wildlife refuge's lovely FEMA trailers until I find a place. Oh Boy! But that will buy me some time to look around.
But you guys are awesome! I appreciate all your help. This is a pretty stressful move for me. I just graduated, and then took an 80 hour course (in 8 days! But I am now a certified Wilderness First Responder!), and then within 5 days, I have to have my stuff out and be on my way. You guys have been very helpful. So if you see a chick in a little red car with Michigan plates, come say hi!
The bank building is right in the middle of "downtown" Davis. There are 4 or 5 restaurants within walking distance, a Shop n Save grocery store, I think there's a Rite-Aide or similar in town too.
Sounds like you did just fine. Welcome to Wild And Wonderful!
