My son may move with me to Asheville. His passion is snowbarding. He competes in USASA events. Is there any snowboarding in the Asheville area? How is it? Any USASA slope style events? What about possible job opportunities in snowboarding (e.g. lessons)?

He's better off looking at the High Country of NC (Boone-Banner Elk area). Sugar Mtn, Appalachian Ski Mtn, and Ski Beech all offer terrain parks and a variety of competitons, conditions permitting. All three have ski and snowboarding schools with professional instruction. It's not a bad drive from Asheville... a little under 2 hours, but possibly too far to commute for a job at that pay level. Having said that, I do have a friend who commutes from near Lake Lure to Sugar Mtn almost daily during the season to work as a ski instructor. He farms the rest of the year.

I've been to every ski resort in NC...I would say Sugar is the best in my opinion...Sugar & Beech are very close to each other in Banner Elk.
it takes me exactly 90 mins to banner elk from asheville. so thats pretty close really.

There is Cataloochee Ski area in Maggie valley, which is like 30 mins to the west of Asheville...its small compared to Sugar and Beech.

there is also Wolf Laurel in Mars Hill, which is right near the TN border (25~ miles N. of AVL)
personally i would never snowboard there again.

and lastly, uski365.com will be the only indoor skiing in the country when completed...and that will be in Canton.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on that to be built, was also supposed to be a race track http://www2.nccommerce.com/eclipsfiles/15406.pdf, and probably a number of other pie in the sky visions.

I didn't know about a planned nascar track there....I think an indoor skiing area there would work though...if they would just build the damn thing already....i contacted them through the site and they say they have no idea when it will be completed...not a good sign, but im hoping it will get built eventually
