Dear The Balogas,
St. Joseph's is now part of the Mission Hospitals complex on Biltmore Avenue. Used to be St. Joe's was a separate hospital across the street from Mission, it was Catholic-run but anybody could go in there, and was a very good hospital, if not quite as modern as Mission, plus Mission has a trauma center. It was merged with Mission roughly 15 years ago, and for a while they were known as Mission-St. Joseph's Hospitals, and eventually fell under the one name. Hope this explains what you wanted to know.
GG
I think so. When Billy Graham was ill last time he spent quite a bit of time there. His family could have easily transported him to CMC or Presby in Charlotte but went to Mission St. Joseph in Asheville instead
The Mission Hospitals as whole is a very good hospital system. They have also taken over the McDowell Hospital and also the Spruce Pine Community Hospital. I think you will find that the care received at the hospital is top notch. My mom had surgery this past January and her care was excellent. I think you'll find the only difference between "Mission" and "St. Joseph's" is the location. It's all the same system so the continuity of care should really be the same.
Of the two campus of Mission, I would rather be in the St. Joe side. But still a patient there needs a patient advocate, someone that will raise hell for missed meals, missed or incorrect meds. Do not assume that the meds they bring you are for you and correct.
Depending on who did the study, the death rate due to hospital mistakes is between 100,000 and 200,000 people a year. Patient or patient advocate (family member) question everything, assume nothing, it may save the patients life.
This is true for every single hospital in the country, a country that is supposed to have the best health care system in the world.

are you quoting a national statistic? The wording makes it seem like Mission has that death rate. Which is definitely not the case. But, good advice about patient advocacy either that or a well informed family member or friend.

Family member was in Mission (Mission campus) last year. Employees without and ID badge attempting to dispense meds, they just 'forgot' to bring a meal to the room, 20 - 30 minute response when buzzing for help.
A patient's room that we walked by to visit our family had put a hand made sign by their door that simply said "feed me - bath me".

wow, I hope you filed a complaint with the hospital administration. I think that situation is probably the exception vs. the rule. I know there are going to be crappy employees regardless of hospital but, it's been my experience with myself and family members that the care is top notch. But, I do concede that there could be mistakes made and your advice on an advocate couldn't be more spot on right good advice!
