I've lived in Onalaska in the past... Onalaska/LaCrosse/Holmen/West Salem are all right by each other (with 10 or 15 minutes at most)... Onalaska is very nice, very good schools, clean/quiet/very low crime, most of the shopping in this area is done in Onalaska (Woodmans/Festival/WalMart/Menards/HD/mall/Target/etc etc)... The city sits up and overlooks L Onalaska (really just the Black/Mississippi River behind the lock and dam)...

If you like to shop, you should be good... The YMCA in Onalaska is brand new...very nice facility. Lots of walking/hiking trails in the area. ...biking. If you like to drink, downtown La Crosse is pretty well known for cheap alcohol and lots of college kids (UW-L/Viterbo/WWTC)... Madison is 2 hrs/Minneapolis is 2 hrs... The river is fun if you have a boat, there are beaches in the area (Pettibone/Northside La Crosse)... Lots of nice parks (Riverside--downtown La Crosse)... once it warms up (it better!) Kids Coulee in Myrick Park is fun for the kids (free).

Housing? Lots of homes for sale...prices seem good right now. Apartments all over this area (lots of college kids in this area). Any specifics, fire away...

Of course you probably know winter sucks... It is 5F right now and cloudy. Since Sunday its been bad (single digits for HIGH temps). Next week its suppose to warm into the 40Fs for at least a day (heat wave!) before getting really cold again. Spring isn't too far off.

I have 3 little kids, so i have to find things to do for them all year.

After the initial shock (climate), you should be good...summer in Wisconsin isn't much cooler then Georgia, so you should feel like your at home. Spring/Fall are great (most of the time)... Winter sucks.

"Summer in Wisconsin isn't much cooler than Georgia"?? Ahh.... no. While you'll get some hot sweltering days in Wisconsin, there will be far, far fewer of them. Yeah, last summer was pretty tough. But if you think it was tough in Wisconsin, you should see what Georgians had to cope with. La Crosse sees 100 degrees once every few years. Ask a Georgian how often they see 100 on their thermometers.

Here are the stats:

La Crosse: July avg temp 79.6F

Atlanta: July avg temp 83.8F

Look up the stats yourself.... Wisconsin can be &*(& hot in summer... last summer was very dry and very humid. Climate change is real and this will probably happen more often.

What the stats don't tell you is that while the average July median or high temperatures may only differ by a few degrees, those averages will only occur for a few weeks and will taper off precipitously by early September, whereas in Georgia it's still hot -- and typically has been since the at least the beginning of May. I've lived through Wisconsin summers and I've lived through summers in downstate Illinois, about on the same parallel as Washington DC/Northern Virginia. Even between these two parallels the difference in summers is palpable, never mind as far south as Georgia.

I haven't been there, but had a friend move there this past fall. He absolutely loves it...but he's a big outdoorsman and loves the local fishing, hunting, etc.

Onalaska, WI is a great place to live! Very clean, well organized and Onalaska High School is one of the top schools in the county and surrounding counties. There are great strip malls and a large mall all clumped together that you can walk to and with a very low crime rate you can feel safe.

The housing market in Onalaska right now is a Buyers Market. The inventory is high and sale price vs list price has a larger gap then normal for the beginning of 2013. Taxes for a typical $150,000 home is about $3,000/year. With Spring right around the corner there should be a bunch of new homes coming on the market but they usually sell fairly quickly since Onalaska is the place to live right now.
