Well, I'm not the type to MAKE anyone speak to me. If my job has nothing to do w/ them & we don't have to work together on anything, then who cares.
However, if I have to work moderately closely w/ the person, then it's best to make the best of it & I guess halfway be cordial even if they're a sourpuss.
There are places for all types of people. You run into trouble when you try to force people to be something they are not. You need the introvert, the extrovert, the high energy individual and the low energy individual on your team. They all add strengths and weaknesses.
I would say in my field, most IT people are engrossed in their monitors. Introverts gravitate towards jobs in those fields. They are perfectly happy with their heads down and hashing out code. However, those in sales and management may need to be a little more vocal and social. Most extroverts feel comfortable in those positions.
I am an introvert. But I can hold a conversation if necessary. No, I don't like small talk. I'd rather have deep conversations. But the workplace is not the place for that.
I am also not trying to be a manager either. So, being outgoing is not really necessary for me.
