New job, flying out for training for three weeks and dress code is business casual. Also note, I'm a guy. Will polo and jeans do? Polo and khakis? Button up and khakis? This is an engineering position. Either way I need to buy some clothes, but want to do it right.

Polo and khakis or something similar. Wait on the jeans until you see other people wear them or save them for later in the week on Thursday/Friday.

I'm not sure who defines "business casual"... if theres a standard at the company, try to find out. My definition does not include jeans, but I know it's perfectly acceptable lots of places.

I'd go a little more conservative to start and see what the rest are wearing. We're business casual and while some where polos and khakis, most wear Dockers or better slacks, and dress shirt without tie.

When "business casual" first started, I worked for a nation-wide corporation. The story/joke at the time was that on the West Coast it meant tie-dyed tee shirts and jean shorts, on the East Coast it meant you could loosen your tie and undo your shirt collar button. True story.

Khakis and a polo or button down. You pack a nice pair of jeans and see if that would be acceptable as well. Casual to me means that a jacket and tie are not required.

Khaki is a color, you must mean chinos.

I'm on the east coast in Boston, a conservative city. Here, business casual means a creased pair of chinos and a button down. Definitely not jeans.

I thought business casual meant at minimum: tucked in plain collar shirts, dress or khaki pants ( jeans and tennis shoes prohibited). However I like other posters learned that the term business casual is now used interchangeably. To be safe buy a suit with or without the jacket/vest and you should be okay for the time being.

Jeans are NOT business casual.

For a guy, you wear a dress shirt and dress pants, no tie, no jacket. Khakis could work, but make sure that they are ironed.
