Obviously you have seen them, too.

That's the worst, right there - depressing everyone around them and not doing themselves any favors with their twenty year old overcoats.

Isn't there an island we can send them to like they used to do with lepers?

And is it always dark outside when they are waiting?

I think they should all be private investigators.

If they bring in dripping umbrella's, I'm fairly certain it's dark.

But your question makes me wonder if they aren't secret spies working for the enemy (i.e. the company) and reporting back about who is doing their work, and who is simply posting online about their overcoats.

OP, do any of them ever remove one of their shoes and talk into it?

I agree. The hiring managers are sad. They should be ashamed of themselves. At least with an more mature job seeker you don't have to worry about them jumping ship when a higher better offer comes along in a year or two

If they've worked in a good office job for decades, why don't they have enough $$ saved to retire already?

You will be one of those sad sacks soon enough. It won't seem quite so funny to you then, but keep your chin up.

Well if I had a company which I don't I would hire a sprinkle of this and a sprinkle of that. A nice variety, an onion scented breathed receptionist of obese proportions and a irritating yet motherly accent, in her late 50's. A young salesman with a freckled faced demeanor and bright eyed sparkle. An over coated old man who drinks his coffee black and won;t speak to anyone till 10am after he wakes up a bit. Also a gay man with red colored framed glasses who acts 20 years his junior and we all think of him as 36 even though he is 55. He entertains us with stories from his design business he has on the side.
Ah nice vision.
