And the OP's current employer could be genuine about trying to keep him\her. I realize there is tons of information on the internet about why accepting counters from current employers can be bad but I have years of personal experience where managers were actually happy to find out an employee was searching in time to actually do something to get them to stay. As long as this isn't being spread all over the company (which it may be in this case) it can quietly stay between employee, manager and HR.

Another Update:

I decided to stay. My boss and I had a talk this afternoon and she said she wants to invest in my career growth within the next 9 months. She wants to make sure I'm ready to be a manager by next year (which is fair).
She told me to submit the Jr. Analyst job description today and delegated the hiring process to me.

Thanks so much for those who've chimed in. Sorry if I was being too annoying. This was a really big decision for me and I needed a second opinion.

Cheers!

You weren't being annoying. I rather enjoyed watching how you conducted yourself in the process and you did great. Good luck in your future and don't forget, invest in yourself by using your company's benefits ie. education to make yourself more attractive both internally and externally.

So what? In 18 months he can take his $85k salary history and get a $100k offer elsewhere. I doubt this was the OP's one and only lifetime opportunity to get a job offer.

This. I'm not too concerned. Plus AT THE VERY LEAST, I know I'm valuable. I know my worth now. And AMEX isn't the only one reaching out to me

If anything, I'll be more than 85 in 18 months as you said!

(hopefully)

Thanks bud, I really appreciate it! Yeah I was planning to do that

Pro tip: don't gauge your worth on whether an employer (or anyone, for that matter) sees value in you. The vast majority of them don't care about you. You are useful as long as you're helping their bottom line.

CoOp - I know you talked to your boss and I know you've decided to stay. But have you received the written offer from the company yet? Please take more time to think it over.

How long have you thought about this? The fact that they sought you out indicates a high level of interest. Based on my experience you may want to take a serious look again at the following factors:

- Company A which you're currently at is retail may as others stated go on the down trend. Company B which you interviewed at I know for a fact is on the Up and Up because I know folks that work there in different capacities

- How many years experience do you have? If you are a recent grad and graduated in the past 4 years I would highly suggest getting Company B on your resume. The experience you get there and the name will greatly help your career.

- What are the downsides from your perception potentially to Company B compared to Company A aside from the "devil you know"? You should ask for a bump to the offer and let them know you've been given a raise at your current employer.

This is my follow-up story to the thread I posted last Thursday:
Got a Job Offer as Sr. Analyst at New Company; Boss Now Wants to Promote me to Manager - Need to Decide Tomorrow.
I asked an Admin to edit the company names out of respect.

Just to give you my background: I work for a fortune 100 retail store (department store), love my job, but was scouted by a massive credit card company recently ([snip]) and was given an offer which I accepted VERBALLY last Friday. They have not sent me the package info and whatnot.

I haven't given my 2 weeks in yet (I was planning to do so today). However, package hasn't come in yet (I don't know when it'll be, but my new hiring manager said it'll be early this week).

My current boss will be out on maternity leave on Thursday, meaning Wednesday will be my last chance to give in my 2 weeks verbally. I REALLY REALLY am hoping I get the chance to have a sit down with my current boss before she leaves (it would be HORRIBLE to have to send an email about my 2 weeks in..)

But here's the twist: My boss emailed me this morning out of nowhere.. basically complimenting my hard work/skills and ultimately gave me a nice salary bump, which is EXACTLY how much I'll be making at my new company.

She also said she'll promote me to manager in 9+ months (I knew it wouldn't be this year..).

Thing is, as I mentioned before, I love where I work now and I'm actually happy about the salary bump. I mean, it's the same amount of money I'll be making at [snip].

What the heck should I do? I obviously don't wanna burn bridges with either party. A little part of me wants to stay, but I'm afraid I will ruin my reputation if I retract my offer.

Please help.. I'm very stressed out about this. I'm either making the best decision in my life or slightly worse decision (both are good opportunities to me..)

Thanks!
Don't accept the other job even though you already did verbally but it was only verbal. It is easier to go back and change your mind verbally versus when you have already signed the paperwork.Stay with the job that you love which has now given you the pay that you had been wanting to have for awhile.

You'll get even less respect from your boss if you STAY. Follow through on the job you received the offer for. Too late now.

Don't fall for the raise and promotion.
