Americans are more family oriented. For example, many Americans are always looking for some kind of utopish place where they can raise a family. The "fun for the whole family" concept is American.
For example, no Spanish could have created a Disneyland or a Theme Park devoted to only children. Now, Spanish children are more Americanized, they are not treated like humans but as overprotected imbeciles. They don't play in the streets, they don't eat bread soaked with wine, they don't hunt birds and cats with BB guns, they are treated as perfect borderlines.
In the US, you have entire suburban areas devoted to family life, kids are sort of pampered and insulated and taken to religious activities. Any Spanish would go crazy in such a setting.
In this respect, Americans reminds me of Spain 50 years ago, the only difference is that families are more nucleoid...father, wife and children. Spanish families were far more extended and still are to a certain degree.

I don't know who defines what real protestants are about. The ones in Germany, where protestantism was born, probably have little in common with those in Alabama as they are rather progressive and liberal, whereas the southern catholic half of Germany is more conservative, not only in terms of social issues, but also regarding economics.
no offense but the kind of protestants who are the majority in germany , scandanavia and england are for the most part , wishy washy , watered down , diluted , whateveryourhavingyourself liberals , the real deal protestants of the religous kind live in places like northern ireland ( think ian paisley ) parts of scotland , south africa and the southern states of the usa
as for the catholics you refer to in southern germany , thier are of course catholics who are right wing on economic matters but they are not following classic catholicism , thier are plenty of catholics in america who vote republican and who are right wing across the board , they are for all intents and purposes protestants , thier is a term in ireland known as protestant catholics , people who like going to mass every so often but have sex before marriage , support gay marriage etc
Spanish are just like the Irish (except that we have wine, sun and draught Guiness).
We get seriously drunk every day, not only during August.
We Catholics have no problem with alcohol, we can get seriously drunk and confess at the nearest corner.

What about Catholic guilt and all that?
I think while Southern Europeans have always liked to have fun, liberality when it came to say sex is something new/was confined to certain classes. Rural Italians and the older Italians I know have struck me as rather conservative when it came to a lot of things.

I don't think tiny Ireland is the standard for deciding who is a real catholic or protestant. To me protestants in the places you mentioned are radicals and extremists.
And yes, real protestants are more liberal and progressive than catholics in my view. After all, protestantism was the protest against certain anti-social developments under catholicism, for instance corruption, the role of the pope (replacing Jesus as the head of church), the hierarchy (under catholicism ordinary people were even forbidden to read the bible, it was an elitist church ruled by a Latin-speaking caste of men), etc.

catholics ( in ireland anyway ) were ( maybe still are a bit ) puritanical about sex but they were never ever puritanical about money or politics and especially alcohol
