In the United States is pretty easy to identify what our three greatest cities are, New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago, and basically in that order also. But what are the three GREATEST cities in the following countries?
United Kingdom
Germany
France
Italy
Russia
Japan
China
India
South Korea
Mexico
Brazil
Venezuela
Answer any number of these countries, even if you only list one that's fine. I'm curious on everyone's opinion here.
Just as you listed the three great cities of the US by population, I'd be tempted to just list the top three cities in each country by population. How else could you ever define Greatest?, it all becomes a subjective matter.
Mexico: San Blas, Catemaco, Felipe Carillo Puerto. If you don't like bird-watching, you'll probably prefer to use other criteria, but the OP didn't specify any criteria, so those are mine.
UK-
I think he means prominence
London- it is a Primate City
Birmingham- Only major city in England with a smaller percent of white peoplethan London, 2nd Largest city.
Manchester- Because of it's Access to other English cities like Liverpool. It also has 2 top class football teams.
Germany
Berlin- Capital and it's one city
Koln-Dusseldorf-Dortmund- Just because this exists.
Munich- de facto Southern Capital of Germany in my opinion.
France-
Paris- Primate city
Lyon- Close between Marseille but has Access To geneva and is closer to Paris
Marseilles- Diverse as it gets in France.
Italy-
Rome- Only Because it's the capital
Milan- Suburbs sprawls into Switzerland. It reminds me of an American city with it's sprawl. "It's beautiful"
Napoli- Mount Vesuvius, looks cool on a map.
Those 3 countries were hard for 2nd and 3rd place because they have a lot of other great cities too.
Russia
Moscow-Primate city
Saint Petersburg- 2nd largest city
Novosibirsk- This one was hard So I just chose Novosibirsk
Japan- My favorite country to look at on a map besides the U., if you want to talk City Size japan is in the same ring as the U.S with just 1/3 rd of the population.
Tokyo-Yokohama-Chiba- People think Houston sprawls, I think Tokyo can compete with BosWash in terms of magnitude. I mean Tokyo has suburbs (Chiba) (Yokohama isn't really suburban and deserves the Fort Worth ranking in this.) That have more people than the 11th and 12th biggest cities in the U.S and if you took each part of the metro prefecture by prefecture, you would still have "suburban" prefectures that have cities bigger than many of america's largest cities.
Osaka-Kyoto-Kobe- This area is just too huge for me to put Nagoya ahead of it.
Nagoya- For a stand alone city it is impressive. Really impressive.

Great and fascinating list, thank you. Some of these I have not heard of, I like learning of the other prominent cities a country has to offer. Just as the United States is more than just New York City, England is more than just London.

France - Paris, Lyon, Marseille
Italy - Roma, Milano, Napoli
