This may a really silly question but my husband and I both have leased vehicles in Florida which we'd be bringing to Fort Mill when we move. Would we be taxed on these since we don't own them?
Yes, you will. It is exactly the same as if you owned them.
On top of that, expect a nightmare trying to get them tagged and titled in SC. I've been trying to get mine done since June 20. The problem is, the DMV insists on getting the original title along with your check and paperwork. Of course, the owner, in my case Toyota, has the title. Toyota gave me a certified copy of the title and power of attorney to sign for them and the DMV would not accept it. Now I have a volley of paperwork going back and forth between the DMV and Toyota and I have no control. It is driving me nuts!
Don't wait to start the registration process, especially if your tags in FL are about to expire (mine were Jul 07). You'll need all the time you can get to get them done. I had to re-register in VA due to this! Good luck.
Although I wouldn't wish it on anyone, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who went through a nightmare to register my leased Honda! I started on 4/16 and didn't get done until 8/8. And they tried to charge me a $75 late fee for not registering within 45 days! I considered turning in my vehicle early just to get it resolved. So sad.
