Description: This nonprofit group’s primary focus is to promote acoustic and folk music in the area. TKMA produces the annual Tucson Folk Festival, a 2-day event held each May that presents a variety of acoustic music styles by local and national performers (see the Festivals & Events chapter). It also produces or coproduces a number of other concerts year-round at venues around town and presents free music in local schools. Description: Founded in 1992, this not-for-profit gallery is affiliated with the artists’ cooperative the Drawing Studio. The gallery space features the work of students and professional artists in a variety of media. There are continuous year-round exhibitions here, and the studio offers weekly drawing and studio practice open to the public, a wide variety of workshops, and courses ranging from drawing to printmaking and calligraphy.

Description: Specializing in Native American vintage photographs and classic photography, this 3,500-square-foot gallery also exhibits contemporary paintings, prints, and sculptures. Etherton operates the Temple Gallery on the second floor above the courtyard at the Temple of Music and Art as well. The main gallery downtown is open Tues through Sat. Description: For a unique experience in one of Tucson’s most historic downtown districts, head to La Pilita in Barrio Viejo, next to the El Tiradito Shrine and El Minuto Cafe (see the Restaurants chapter). A small museum and gallery, exhibits here change monthly and focus on regional history. A permanent exhibit of historic photos of early Tucson is worth a look, and don’t skip the store featuring books on regional history and folk crafts. Open Mon through Sat; closed in summer.
