Description: The gondola at Heavenly takes you up the mountain for about 3,000 feet, and the views of the Lake Tahoe Basin from the top are spectacular. Up high you’ll find a huge deck where you’ll be treated to more spectacular views. You can also take a hike from the gondola, basking in the high-altitude sun (don’t forget the sunblock). The sightseeing gondola ride is $30 for adults, $26 for teens, $20 for children ages 5 to 12, and free for those younger than 5. See the Attractions chapter for more details.

Description: This center is the starting point for a wonderful nature walk called “The Rainbow Trail,” where hikers are introduced to the plants and animals that live and grow around the lake. The highlight of this trail is a viewing chamber below the level of the stream where you can see the trout and Kokanee salmon in their natural environment. You can also visit Taylor Creek Marsh, a protected wetlands. The visitor center and trail are great ways for youngsters to learn about the birds, fish, animals, and plants around Lake Tahoe. The rangers are really outstanding, and they love to answer youngsters’ questions. (See the Attractions chapter for more information.)

19. South Tahoe Skateboard Park

Description: This skateboard park is very well designed and popular. Helmets and pads are required, and you can use skateboards, in-line skates, and bikes. The park is open from sunup to sunset, weather permitting. There is no charge to use the park.
