Description: Founded in 1866 as the Hebrew Hospital and Asylum, the hospital is now part of the Lifebridge Health System. It is Maryland’s largest community hospital and the third-largest teaching hospital in the state. With 467 beds and 2,543 employees, the hospital’s residency program includes doctors from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and other schools in Baltimore and elsewhere. Among its accomplishments are the introduction of a procedure to heal corneal epithelial glaucoma, showing the benefits of administering magnesium to speed recovery times after open-heart surgery, development of a Minimally Invasive Direct Cardiac Artery Bypass, and the invention of Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, both of which improve a patient’s success after heart problems. The hospital has opened a state-of-the-art Emergency Center, called ER7, which offers seven separate patient-care centers under one roof. The goal of the center is to reduce the anxiety of patients and their families while delivering the necessary and best care possible, including concierge service, 24-hour valet parking, and 22 private waiting rooms. An agency of the Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore, the hospital’s specialties include heart services, cancer care, neurosciences, rehabilitation services, and women’s and children’s health care.
