Description: Located one hour west of St. Louis, Meramec Caverns is a fascinating look at the world of caves. Rumored to have served as a hideout for outlaw Jesse James, the cave also has nearby camping, motels, boat rides, and canoe rentals. This is an excellent activity no matter what season you visit, because the cave is always cool in the summer and warm (well, warmer than the air outside) in the winter months. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk about a mile, total. Tours last about 75 to 80 minutes, and strollers are not allowed. There’s a snack bar, gift shop, and restaurant on-site. Boat rides on the Meramec River are also available, or you can rent a canoe or raft and float downriver on your own. Kids can also pan for gold or gemstones at the Meramec Mining Company. There are extra fees for the boat and canoe rentals and the Meramec Mining Company.
