Description: Residents of the Oak Hill region in south Austin have a wonderful local newspaper that covers just about everything there is to know in their growing neighborhood. News and sports from the local schools; columns from the district’s county, state, and federal government leaders; a column aimed at senior citizens and another on lifestyle combine, of course, with area news and business coverage to make a fine neighborhood publication. Published by the Oak Hill husband-and-wife team of Will Atkins and Penny Levers, the Gazette has been in business since 1995. It’s published on Fri and is available by subscription or at newsstands in the area.

Description: Pfinding the Pflag isn’t too hard in Pflugerville, the pfine community with the pfunny name. The Pflag, another Cox publication, is Pflugerville’s pflourishing weekly newspaper. Published Thurs, it includes features of interest to local readers as well as community and business news about the town and the surrounding areas of Travis and Williamson Counties.

Description: Established in 1877, just a few years after the city of Round Rock itself was formed, the Leader has grown significantly from the 4-page, hand-set publication of the early days. The paper emphasizes community and school news, covers local and Williamson County politics, and also keeps readers informed of the city’s meteoric growth.

The weekly newspaper, published on Thurs, was started by local owner and publisher Bart Stephens in 1986. The paper publishes an annual sports guide in the fall and a shopping guide at Christmastime as well as biannual sections on Healthy Living and Home and Garden. In an effort to “Keep Austin Weird," newsroom execs say, the News sponsors an annual Art Car Parade in Apr. Artists from all over Texas decorate their cars and show them off during the parade. Founded in 1976, the newspaper focuses on the cities of Rollingwood and West Lake Hill, and also serves readers in surrounding communities. The Picayune is one of several area weeklies owned by Cox Enterprises, Inc., the Atlanta-based company that owns the Austin American-Statesman.

Description: This online Spanish-language (with some English) periodical is one of the Austin ­American-Statesman’s niche products targeting specific audiences in the area, and it’s published at the Statesman’s headquarters on South Congress. The well-received Ahora Si makes liberal use of the Associated Press’s Spanish-language newswire for state and world news, but also publishes many staff-written stories and Spanish translations of Statesman articles of interest to the Hispanic community in and around Austin. The coverage is comprehensive and in addition to news includes arts and entertainment, immigration issues, sports, business and finance, life and style, and a variety of staffers’ blogs.

Description: Austin’s oldest newspaper for the Mexican-American community, Arriba was founded in 1980. Description: A well-established weekly publication for the area’s Spanish-speaking population, El Mundo includes local, national, and international news and features, as well as sports and entertainment of interest to the Hispanic community. Locally owned and operated, the newspaper is a strong advocate for area Hispanics and does not shy away from taking issue with the mainstream press over its coverage of the community. The paper is published Thurs and is sold in area newsstands.

Description: This Spanish-language monthly newspaper provides information relevant to Austin’s Hispanic population, including changes in US immigration policy, news on Hispanic and community leaders, community support organizations, and activities within the area’s Catholic churches. The newspaper is distributed throughout the Austin area. Journalist Gloria Montelongo Aguilar and her husband, Miguel, started El Norte in 1996 in the back room of their home with two used computers and a printer bought at a pawn shop.

Description: Working out of his home, publisher, poet, and political activist Akwasi Evans debuted NOKOA in 1987 with the goal of creating a newspaper that reflected the interests and views of progressive political activists of all ethnicities. For more than two decades, the free weekly paper has championed the rights of African Americans, Hispanics, Anglos, Asians, Native Americans, women, gays, lesbians, and the disabled communities. Evans calls the publication “a true progressive paper with an unabashed African-American perspective.” The paper, published Thurs, covers Austin city government and the Texas Legislature when it is in session, as well as local, regional, national, and international news. The website contains the weekly edition.

Description: This free weekly newspaper focuses on news of interest to Austin’s African-American community. Owner T. L. Wyatt has been publishing the Villager since 1973 as a voice of advocacy with a focus on the positive events in the African-American community. Wyatt calls the Villager “the good news newspaper.” The paper prints articles not often found in the mainstream press and analyzes news and events that pertain to its readers. Wyatt’s weekly editorial column, “Rappin,” appears on the front page. Newspapers are available on Fri at distribution points in East, South, and Central Austin. The Villager is one of the few family-run newspapers around Austin to have upgraded to a successful electronic version.

Description: Published in Austin by the Texas Department of Transportation’s Travel and Information Division, this hefty guide of nearly 300 pages features highlights of tourist attractions throughout the state. Seven special sections summarize attractions around Texas’s major cities, including Austin and the Central Texas area. Among the guide’s many attributes are listings and descriptions of nearly 150 Texas lakes. The guide also lists national and state forests as well as state parks. The publication is free and can be requested at the toll-free number above or ordered online. It can also be found at the Capitol Information Center on the grounds of the State Capitol. The guide’s online version has even more features, allowing you to map out and share a Texas travel itinerary.
