Accommodations - Williamsburg, Virginia

Accommodations

The pineapple was the colonial symbol of hospitality, and it still signifies gracious accommodation. Today you’ll have a much easier time finding welcome here than did the British, French, and Continental armies, and later the Civil War’s Yankee soldiers. They boarded at the colonial inns and taverns in the Historic Area, the true antecedents of today’s hotels, motels, and inns. Your stay should be much more comfortable.

The Williamsburg area offers more than 10,000 hotel and motel rooms in a wide range of prices, so you should have no difficulty finding something that suits you. If you’re coming at Christmas, however, we recommend that you make your reservations well in advance.

A toll-free reservation service, (800) 999-4485, is operated by the Williamsburg Hotel/Motel Association and can advise you on a choice of accommodations as well as make your reservation with member properties. Most accommodations, in turn, will make dinner reservations for you, and tickets to Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens can be purchased at many of the check-in desks. Or visit www.gowilliamsburg.com to explore all the options and make reservations.

While we give you up-to-date details on amenities at the time of publication, some things can change abruptly. To ensure your satisfaction, we strongly recommend you ask about details on specifics such as ground-floor rooms, elevators, separate heating and cooling controls, mattress sizes, showers or tubs, age of the establishment, whether your four-footed family members are welcome, and availability of cable TV or Internet access when you make your reservation.

You might also inquire about proximity to highways, or CSX railroad noise. Other considerations are distance to your local touring destination and directions from I-64 or whichever route you plan to travel.

When making a reservation, inquire about special discounted rates for AAA members, children, senior citizens, members of the military, and government travelers. You may also want to ask about changes in pricing between in-season and out-of-season times. These periods are defined by the individual lodging, but generally in-season or peak season is from late March to November and again during the winter holiday season. Off-season months are generally January, February, and much, if not all, of March, though this can change, depending on when Easter Sunday falls. Reservations made well in advance are almost a necessity in peak season.

The accommodations listed below accept major credit cards unless otherwise noted. And, unless we tell you differently, assume that the lodgings allow smoking and children, and that the facility is wheelchair accessible. Although it’s certainly possible to find a pet-friendly hotel or motel in the Historic Triangle, it’s not the norm. If pets are not mentioned in a hotel’s description, assume that you and your family are welcome there, but pets are not.

Accommodations - Bed-And-Breakfasts And Guest Homes

Newcomers to Virginia soon learn that there is a history to everything here and if you choose to lodge with Williamsburg residents, you will learn you are continuing a tradition dating back more than 200 years, when, during “publick times” twice each year, the legal and governmental business of the colony took place, and the city was as crowded with visitors as it can get during high season today.

In the early days of the Historic Area restoration, there were no hotels in town. The response was to do what folks in the ’Burg have always done: open doors to visitors and offer them hospitality. And while a contemporary hotel/motel room may meet your lodging needs, staying in a tastefully appointed bed-and-breakfast sets a certain tone for your visit. The people who run Williamsburg’s small inns and B&Bs are also some of the most knowledgeable residents when it comes to directing you for making best use of your time.

Today, Williamsburg has a well-established roster of exquisite bed-and-breakfasts, some of them world-class, national-award winners. Each has a unique decor and personality all its own. Each offers different amenities. Some are close to the Historic Area, while others are as far afield as Charles City County—you could even stay in a true southern plantation house dating from colonial times, if you’re willing to drive a bit.

Keep in mind, too, that the bed-and-breakfast establishments offer some of the finest food served in the area. Breakfasts take on grand proportions in some of the lodgings, and no, you don’t have to sit at a large table with a bunch of strangers in all cases. “That’s one thing we learned over the years,” said Sandy Hirz, who along with her husband, Brad, runs the lovely Liberty Rose Bed and Breakfast. “We discovered that some people simply prefer to enjoy a quiet, private breakfast at a table for two.”
