Labor Day Blues

Posted 09-01-2014 at 05:37 AM by Fortoggie

THOUGHTS ON LABOR DAY: Had a round table discussion with some managers over the weekend. One said; " Now that college is back in session I will hire several interns, I get as much work out of them in four hours as I can out of the long term employee's in eight hours at half the price and don't have to pay them any benefits." A chain store mgr. said that he was allowed to hire only one person at 36 hours and the others were 16 to 24 hours per week. I protested but these people can't make a living at that rate. He said, " that's just the way it is."
Another was a team leader inside a large factory. he told of the many changes the efficiency experts had brought into the operation, in one case a worker had to reach about 18 inches for a part, now it's only 6 inches. My guess is that you can now operate with 15 to 20 percent fewer people, I said; he nodded," that's about right."
Meanwhile Time Magazine had a whole page, this issue, of companies with so much money in reserve that they literally didn't known what to do with it [ page 70 ]
Apple 158 billion, Google 58 billion, on and on to fill up a page.
