On Wives and Concubines

Posted 09-05-2014 at 10:33 AM by Fortoggie

Dr. David Samson. spoke on Gideon using Judges, Chapter 8: 32-35 as his text and he spoke to a full house of about 1000 people; mostly blue collar workers. The date was the Sunday before labor day and not one word was said regarding the contribution of the working men and women in his congregation, either for what they do to make their community better or for that matter what they do for the church through their tithes and offerings as a result of them having a job.
Instead the pastor spoke about Gideon finishing well. He made no mention of the fact that Gideon had been brutal and without forgiveness or grace, earlier in the chapter. Not only had Gideon won a battle by killing many people but on his return from the battle he went out of his way to kill many people in the little towns on the way back from the main battle. In fact if you study chapter 32 carefully you might think that ISIS got some of their techniques of warfare from Gideon.
The people wanted Gideon to be their ruler but Gideon wanted no part of that responsibility; instead he showed his greed by taking all the gold ear rings the soldiers had taken from their enemies and it became a trap for him.
Wonder why the pastor didn't mention that Gideon had many wives and seventy sons [ and in all likelihood seventy five daughters ] also he had a concubine who lived in another city. In using Gideon as someone who ran a good race, he had to leave out a lot of pertinent, if embarrassing information about Gideon. The pastor could not say to the congregation, so fellas if you want to follow Gideon's role model, then get all the wives you can and keep a concubine or two in the cities you travel too.
In fact Gideon is such a poor role model for anything that it would be best if his name was never brought up.
However if you had to use him in a sermon, why not use 8: 22-23 to point out that Gideon lost his one great opportunity to provide leadership to a primitive people. He had several years of peace in which he could have formed this small struggling people into a more cohesive community.
