One, not sure why he "resigned" from the force. He should have doubled-down, stayed, and forced them to fire him. Then sued for lost wages and damage to reputation, once exonerated by the law (or rather, "not prosecuted." Big difference)!
That fellow Zimmerman from Florida should have done the same thing. As should Casey Anthony. All three were either not charged, or not guilty, under our judicial system. Does not mean "innocent". DOES mean free to pursue the American Dream like the rest of us.
I'd do the opposite of "going into hiding," I'd be right out there in the public eye, often as feasible, and legally protect myself with the deadliest instrument known to modern man: my cellphone. I'd have the police there in a hot minute for every bit of harassment from that point onward. I'd be on the news weekly, holding press conferences. I'd counter-sue everyone looking for some sort of "payday" from my not-guilty self. I can probably name ten contingency-based lawyers in thirty seconds that would love to represent such a client.
More importantly, the harassment and immoral excoriation should be monetized. Make those who pimp your name pay for the privilege. Up to, and including:
- Start a self-defense academy, or other private defence consulting business.
- Or, a general physical security business. No marketing needed, at-first.
- Or, as a paid consultant on self defense and media matters to a firm like Xe or other private defense contractor.
- Book deal: you bet. Every one I could get.
- Professionally-produced and managed YouTube and other social media campaign.
- Lecture circuit: out there each and every week, touring the country, displaying enough dignity to excoriate the haters.
They'd not forget my face for YEARS, not just the current new cycle of several months, max.
Yes, I would seriously do all of the above. God forbid I'm ever in an analogous situation...note that I am not a law enforcement officer, neighborhood watchman, etc, just a concerned citizen...but the best defense is a good offense in these situations. I'm perfectly capable of taking care of my own self-defense, in extremis, though as mentioned above I'd have the police (and filed reports) with me every step of the way as-needed.
