Here's a question for you photographer's. When I do my 3 week trip started in late August I'll be bringing this set up: Canon 50D plus 40D for my backup and/or second body. Lenses will be all Canon's: 10-22, 17-55IS f2.8, 70-200IS f4, and 100-400IS. I have been considering getting the nifty fifty but not sure if it would be needed or neccessary. Anyone out there have this lens? And if so, what do you use it for? I really don't do any portraits but thought it might come in handy for indoors, dusk/dawn lowlight conditions, or even the Northern lights.

What are you going to do when you look out the window and have a big nose shoved up against it about a foot wide....(the closer you get, the bigger they look)

Unless of course you forgot to close the window...

In that case I guess I'd have to try to knock hell out of him with my 100-400mm!

I would like to take credit for it, but it was taken at one of the early warning Radar sites here in Alaska. It has been all over the Internet and no way to give credit to whom ever took it.

I have a couple of photos like that with a beer in the window (beer that you drink) and it has a polar bear looking just about like that photo in though the window next to the beer. It was taken up at one of the radar sites where they rebuilt the windows wider and a few years later, a bear jumped up through the glass and mauled one of the guys pretty badly. Bear was shot, but not a fun day for the crew.

Should have put this one for the nose shot. A friend took it at work when we were driving up North...

A friend took this photo when the bear was trying to bum a ride, wanted him to open the door... I told him not a good idea...

Bring them all. The nifty fifty is fine for indoors at the time of the year, but outdoors you will have plenty of sunlight most of the night For the Northern Lights, which I doubt you will see in July, you want to use the 10-22, or the 17-55 on the wide end.
