And as long as we keep giving them free food and hotel rooms and money, they will keep coming here!

No kidding! There are people that truly can not care for themselves, whether because of mental illness, chronic health issues, or finding themselves old and frail with no money and no family left, they need help.

Then there is a whole other segment of the homeless population that could get by on their own, or with some assistance, but won't as long as they are getting things for free.

It happens in family settings too. For example, if the children grow-up and become accustomed to being taken care of (financially and physically), there is a very good chance that they will become dependent on you instead of them making a living by themselves. It is like a calf sucking the cow's tit for a lifetime

And yes, it is not the same situation for all the homeless, specially children, the handicap, sick (mentally or physically), and so on. But there are a lot of people that can work but still make a living by depending on others than by working.

A recent development with the homeless situation in Anchorage. https://www.ktoo.org/2023/10/10/a-te...-in-anchorage/

Multiple vehicles impounded and a few people arrested at a homeless camp downtown.

My point, again, is that Alaska should take care of its own instead of giving people the choice between freezing under a tarp and landing on the streets of wherever, USA where they know no one and often don't have the survival skills to make it for very long.

I've made it as clear as I can that I'm not talking about the occasional drifter; send them where they want to go and be done with it. But because a disproportionate number of Anchorage's homeless are from the villages and have rarely, if ever, set foot outside of Alaska's borders, I think the state needs to to do better by them than sending them "somewhere warm" and dressing it up as altruism.
So how many homeless are you planning to take in this winter?
How about taxes, can we put you down for 30 maybe 40% increase to pay for all the new shelters?

I don't believe she is an Alaskan resident anymore. Would you prefer that we give our homeless a one way ticket to Maine?

Not that it's any of your business, but unlike the vast majority of Alaskans (Alaska doesn't even have a personal income tax), I actually pay a pretty substantial amount to the state of Alaska in business and fisheries taxes, and don't get me started on federal. And I'm not even a resident anymore.

So you'd prefer Alaska sent its problems to Maine for someone else to pay for? You, perhaps? The mayor of Anchorage would be more than happy to oblige.

Kinda crappy of them to not let that lady get her stuff out. I don't see how that would have hurt anything.

That was quite a collection of vehicles/homes. Even a firetruck.

She had 10 days notice to get her stuff out. They didn't just show up out of the blue.
