Okay, I have been noticing on CD that a lot of regular participants are in the 40+ age group, and what surprises me most is it is a lot of women making decisions to make life-altering moves to AK for example. Also I had talked to people in this age group that have lived there forever, or a long time, and done with winter and ready to go on....There are also men in making the decisions also in this group so certainly not to exclude them, but the women and single women are surprising me....Does anyone else see this and what is our deal? or any other thoughts as to moving to, leaving, or staying put?
My thoughts are that for single and divorced women they want something totally different then what they are use to; new adventures, new life, etc. I think people are generally dissatisfied with the economy, etc. also and this could cause people to be restless and seeking somewhere they think is better.
I would quess for those leaving that alot of it is they are tired of the winters, or just didn't like it here and didn't make a go of it, or have received a job offer in lower 48. I think also alot of those who have been here for a long time and retire want a more gentle climate. Alaska is beautiful as we both know but beauty won't put food on the table and I think some came simply because of the beauty and had a rude awakening with jobs, etc.
It is interesting as to why people move to Alaska and why they leave. What's your thoughts Grannysroost?
Women in that age group often have their children raised and feel free to do things they've always wanted to do. I don't think it's a new thing; I remember years ago several of my mother's close women friends moved up after divorce or the kids moving out.
My niece and I were riding around in my truck today having a conversation similar to this one. Of course she's younger than I am but neither one of us think we can do winters on the island again. When I'm there this time of year I get sick and tired of not being able to spend much time outdoors; I hate the wind and being assaulted by rain blowing sideways. Farther north, winters are easier because you can at least get out and snowmachine et al and even though the days are shorter, the quality of them is better.
