I've lived in the Albany, New York area all of my life and go to downtown Albany all of the time. There's only one way I get there-car, more specifically 787 and 90. I think its finally time to seriously consider some sort of mass transit system. I have read past posts on this subject. What does everyone think?
There was bus rapid Transit proposed but it was watered down to an express bus lanes to the dismay of most of the people in Albany. I'm sure a LRT line or system will get built over the next 3 decades...
Yeah the bus rapid transit line, BusPlus, is very disappointing. But I think the brt corridor, Route 5/Central Ave/State Street, would be an ideal location for light rail
Above is a link to an even newer version of the map.
Nexis4Jersey, do you think that there is some potential for even one of these lines? If yes, which one(s)?
Ambitious is a great way to put it. I think if upstate got some money for a system like my map shows, minus the Blue and Yellow Lines above Livingston station maybe, people would be extremely surprised about how high ridership numbers would be, especially the Orange Line which would take so much traffic off of the Northway during peak hours.
Dear Senators Gillibrand (an Albany native) and Schumer as well as Representative Tonko,
Lets get Albany some money to get us on the right track, which happens to be a subway or light rail track.
Who's going to pay for this? Who's going to use it? People have been car dependent since the highways were built and they moved to the burbs. It will be very hard to get people to break that habit. It would be cool if the light rail that was proposed ages ago to from Saratoga to Albany actually happened, but would it survive? CDTA is already HEAVILY funded by the state and has had financial problems over the years. Another Amtrak the country certainly doesn't need.
