the city.
In a 100,000 year event, we'll have an 8.2 in the middle of a flood and the resultant
tsunami down the Rio Grande basin will wipe out Belen. Better buy in Rio Rancho
where you're well above the river...
wldgrdnr: You and your spouse seem to be looking for approximately the same and my husband and I are looking for. We intend to move to Rio Rancho in November or the Spring of 2012. We are moving because our daughter and grandchildren live there and love it. We currently live in California and love it here, but feel that as we get older we need to be closer to family, plus she just had another baby and we want to be in his life full time or close to it. The other three we were working and weren't able to spend more than summers with them.
I have researched, over the past year, the housing in Rio Rancho. We are only looking for approximately $250,000 for a 3-bedroom, 2-bath, one story home with more than .25 acres. I have found that they are doing a lot of building in northern Rio Rancho that have 1/2 acre to full acre lots; although, these lots offer septic tanks which is no big deal to us. If you look on the maps using an aerial view, you can see how close the houses are from each other. There are also at least 3 builders in the area that are building "green" homes that are also within the price range. The builder I spoke with told me that most lots in Rio Rancho are about $85,000 and he builds at $105 per sq.
There is also a lot of building north and northwest of Northern and Unser Blvds. When I visit there, it doesn't seem to me to be a large town it's more small to mid sized town. They have some really good food there too. The law enforcement also seem to be visible... maybe that's why they have a low crime rate. Most of their landscaping is utilizing natural plants and rock... which I don't like. I'm not thrilled with desert, although I live in desert right now, but I also have a lot of green to see everyday. I plan to have grass in my back yard with a concrete fence so I don't see the desert and I think I'll be ok. I don't notice the desert so much when I'm driving.
I don't know about the growing of a garden, but I plan to try. My ex-son-in-law has started that and he seems to be doing ok with his. I hope that you find that Rio Rancho is somewhere you could be happy. Take a look.

We have lived in Rio Rancho 13 years. I have seen lots in good areas, recently at $48,000 per 1/2 acre...
There are some great deals on used homes...
I would stay away from the Mariposa development area until their legal issue on the PID is taken care of.
We need to be reasonably close to decent medical care, as I have some medical issues that require monitoring, but I am accustomed to driving 30 min or so to a doctors office. What us the availability of hospitals close by?
One thing that concerns me is that I need to have a doctor who accepts medicare (and tricare) as I am a disabled vet. In these times it is getting more difficult to find docs who will accept new patients who have medicare. Is that an issue there? (I know it is in Prescott, AZ)
We have a VA hospital here in Albuquerque. There are two new hospitals built on the west side of town - one of which is part of University Hospital (the main campus, to my knowledge, is still the only level 1 trauma center in the state).
Depending on what your issues are, and what kind of specialists you need, that can sometimes be a challenge. It's not all that uncommon to wait as long as a few months for some specialties - and sometimes (though not often) people will have to go out of state for a specialist on an outpatient basis. UNM hospital is very good in many respects, but also very overwhelmed because the uninsured rate is very high here, and they flock to UNM. Finding a doc/facility to accept medicare shouldn't be a problem.
My husband and I are searching for a town to move ... but the crime statistics concern me.

The only thing terrible here, in NM, is Zoidberg, but most people on c-d kinda like him.
Visit both places. They are easily reached in a day from each other.
Then go to Sedona and see what a real hellwhole looks like.
I just moved to NM from Indianapolis just in Dec. of last year. We first choose to live in an apt by Cottonwood Mall, which is a stones throw away from Rio Rancho, but still ABQ. We knew we wanted to live in RR due to better schools, and lower crime. We found an amazing house, and we are very close to everything we need.
With that said, you can find homes that are way out of the way, andyour nearest neighbor is pretty far. You have some new developments that are just now developing and houses are closer but not so close you can hear your neighbors fart. We live in an older section of the city. The closer your are to ABQ, usually the older the section of RR. It's WONDERFUL! We love it. For the price point your looking at, you will find a wonderful house. I would suggest getting a realtor, and if you want, I know of one who is amazing and will work with you throughout. She was amazing. Got a house in 3 months of looking.
The weather here is amazing. The city of ABQ is exploding, and will soon have a metro of over a million if not at that point already, and there are many things to do. So I would suggest moving.
