Race issues in Latin America exist. They are huge. Anyone saying otherwise lives in a bubble or might be trying to protect tge status quo.

I wonder how many of the people that posted (and those that will post) in this thread actually live (or lived) anywhere in Latin America for at least 5 consecutive years.

As of right now, the only one that made this info public is this guy:

I come from Cuba and I can assure you race is never seen in the news, political propaganda or is a mayor factor in people daily lives. I haven't seen anything that indicates race is also a mayor factor in other Latin American countries, at least from a propaganda stand point. News are not constantly reminding people of race in other countries.

Yes, there are racist people, there are prejudices and discrimination too. There is all of that, but people still don't constantly think about race because there isn't something reminding people about race. Just turn on CNN, Fox News, go to msn, yahoo, any website, and all you see is race, race, race.

From your experience, do the white Cubans become MORE RACIST when they emigrate to the US or were they racially prejudiced when they were on the island too?

There are plenty of downscale whites in Cuba, along with blacks and mixed-race people.

Cuba has a sizable white minority that is poor and living in the country (guajiros), Puerto Rico does too. I would also include Brazil. Perhaps Costa Rica (they claim whites are a majority, though).

I wasn't referring to Internet trolls when I wrote that statement for the record . There's a plethora of articles and other pieces of information out there that claim that the racial caste system established by the Spaniard colonists hasn't been completely torn down .

To steer this topic back on to its original course I'd like to pose the question of what are poor/working class Latin Americans like . Do they have any specific subcultural characteristics that separate them from ( say ) their indigenous counterparts ? Do those characteristics vary according to country ? For example do poor/working class whites who live in Chile have different cultural characteristics than those who live in ( say ) Argentina ? Also how do poor/working class Latin American whites who live in urban areas differ from their rural brethren ?

I'd hate for this thread to devolve into yet another tired discussion about race relations , so I hope that most future posts will concern the topic at hand , that is white Latin Americans who happen to be poor/working class . I'm interested in this topic because of the sociological aspect as opposed to the racial one for what it's worth . I mean one hears a lot about most white Latin Americans being well off ( which may very well be true I suppose ) , so I'm curious to find some first hand info about the non well off minority of this social group .

Interesting question to an extent. Interesting because it would be nice to hear the specifics. To an extent because certain things go without saying. Countries are different so there would be a difference in their respective poor White population and everywhere has an urban/ rural divide, so this division would play out amongst poor Whites as well. There is a class hierarchy and there is a racial hierarchy. Even amongst the downtrodden , the racial hierarchy would come into play and there would be differences between poor Whites and other races in the poorer classes. In addition, differences between poor Whites in Argentina and Chile would probably follow the general differences between both countries to begin with. Will be nice to see some specifics if anyone can provide them.

Guajiros are not poor precisisely, The Free Peasant Market has created wealth by allowing to sell outside marxist cooperatives. They also trhive in black market. 90 percent of the economy in non rural areas is in hands of white people and there's more inequality and hate than before, as whites diminish. Havana is heavely segregated and now blacks-from the east- are suspects - by law.

Guajiros tend to be very racist, spousing ideas that blacks are a different animal species, and many have some South Africasn studies that show that blacks are imbeciles.

The discussion of anything related with racism is not kosher, and the promoter will land in jall as an imperialist provocateur.

Cuba is no Spanish chast cockcamainy, but an slavery country as many parts of the US.
