Cause the state subsidizes them. And they offer no services other than an outhouse.

tell me more about these cheap state campgrounds? Centennial Park is a dump. but that's run by the city right?
You can stay at the schools in town, for free. Plus they offer electric, water and free tank pumping once per week.

Yes, Centennial Park is ran by the Muni. Camping

I know here in the Valley the MatSu Borough has at least one campground, and the City of Wasilla just inherited the one at Lake Lucille from the borough. And then there's state campgrounds. And then there's the USFS campgrounds on the Peninsula. And of course some privately ran ones.

Here's the info for the school thing: ASD | Community Events | Summer Camper Host Program
You have to make a one month commitment.

thanks AK!
We are actually staying at one of the schools for the summer while we remodel our house.
We stayed on base at both Fort Rich and the Elmendorf Family Camps all last summer. They are pretty nice (free laundry at Fort Rich). You can winter at the Elmendorf Camp but they don't have water in the winter.

There's one ran by the City of Houston that is right on the Little Su River:

I hope you are looking for future years and not this one. Most of those State campgrounds are booked months in advance. I would advise making reservations at least 90 days before you get there.

You can camp legally anywhere on State or BLM lands, and you can camp on private property with the written permission of the owner. I liked camping out in Talkeetna. The camp sites were a bit cramped, but all the amenities were only a couple blocks away.
