Do what I did. Buy a plane ticket and spend a long weekend there.

Time to bring this thread back to life. It's SNOWING here in PA in mid November. Terrible road conditions for my drive back from work (early). Ugh!

Yeah, we're in the Lehigh Valley and it's awful today. I can't wait until I can get out of here!

I will retire in the coming few months and we had planned to snowbird afterward. So we bought a house in 2013 for that purpose that's been rented since then (Lease expires in Sept 19)...we recently decided to try and live in Arizona year round to see if we like it and how we handle the summer heat....if we don't like it (which I doubt will happen), we'll just move back to the PNW.

I am a long time resident of the Chicago area, planning on retiring in a few years. I have been researching 55+ communities for a while. I am seriously contemplating a trip to Phoenix in February to check out Sun City and Sun City West. Any thoughts on these communities? I know it's all resales n both SC and SCW. How about safety and value for the money? I have looked at single family homes and condos in my price range, and I am astounded at how low the property taxes are. Are property taxes really under $1,000 for a home in the $150K price range? I know there is a $3,500 fee that the buyer must pay when purchasing in these 2 communities.

Thanks in advance...I am also not a winter fan. Central Florida and the Phoenix area are on my short list of places to live during my golden years.

We just moved here from the Lehigh Valley at the end of July. We aren't snowbirds. I've been pretty homesick even though this move was really good for our family, but that snow disaster made me really glad to be here. My family back there took hours to get home from work. No thanks!
