I would think the video would clearly show how the event took place, but officials have refused to release it. I wonder why?

Maybe they thought he would speeding off on the roads and crash into somebody. If it turns out the police had just let him go, could they blame the cops. I don't know how that works.

You would have thought the cops could have gone about the arrest better than they did. Why didn't they have a plan in place to prevent him from getting in a car? It was a tire store, there are cars with keys in them. Why didn't they calmly apprehend him or talk with the manager/owner before and get him in a closed office?

One potentially good thing that the state of Georgia has done is to mandate that every fatal shooting by an officer is immediately referred to GBI. I think that this strikes a good compromise between (1) not making the investigation local, which almost always leads to protecting murderous cops, and (2) avoids scaring conservatives and libertarians by sending the investigation straight to the federal level.

But this assumes that GBI can actually render justice in these types of cases. How they handle this one and the Chamblee shooting from a few months ago will say a lot.

Interesting to see how this turns out in the end. The family may have a case.
