I'd say that football is important to a typical SEC student. Its hard to blame the colleges when the football program rakes in sooooooooo much money and prestige.

Research money and economic impact of a major research institute makes SEC money look like pocket change.

Football is important to a lot of people. However, the type of student who would prioritize that as a part of their career track is likely not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Summer *quarter* (Tech would have been on the quarter system when AnsleyPark stayed there) was pretty laid back when I was there for one. Its not really representative of the school the rest of time, IMO.
I knew students whose penchant for hard drinking was developed at Tech.

There are students who love the Dawgs so much, that they want to go to UGA first and decide on a major later.

Maybe, in your world. Football Saturdays at UGA are a blast, and quickly forgotten Sunday through Friday for the vast majority. My son and his roommate dual enrolled at Tech while in high school. They both were accepted to Tech, and chose UGA anyway. One is at Google, and the other at Stanford doing his PhD. Right out of UGA, imagine that. Not everybody wants the engineering life.

Just like every other UGA student, tight?

I did. Was planning to go to GT for most of my childhood but did a summer program there and toured during finals. It was very depressing, decided on UGA and very happy with my choice. Now I help manage some GT grads. Smart kids, but it is not the school for everyone.

I'm sure everyone else at UGA will tell the same story.

We believe you.

Georgia Tech's research revenue was about 600 million dollars in 2015. In comparison, UGA's football team turned a profit of ~ 50 million (The 20 Most Profitable College Football Teams | Outkick The Coverage)

The difference is that the 600 million probably came from a over a dozen different departments in a half a dozen different schools... whereas the 50 million is the result of the work of one arm of the athletic department (about 100 *students* and perhaps 50 or so staff?). Play well enough and the TV networks will pay you money for the privilege of broadcasting your college brand nationally at least once a week.

50 million is nothing to sneeze at. It would probably get half of the buildings on a campus named after you.
