These are pretty smart, hardworking youngsters so most of them shouldn't wind up with much tuition debt, if any.

Lol. I'd say that the new UGA is the Tech of 15-20 years ago. IMO, Tech of today is still on another level in terms of academics where the two schools overlap.
Keep in mind that UGA's admission rate is still a bit over 50%. Tech's admission rate is half that, ~25%

Not really, unless they managed to start a successful business in high school or their parents are wealthy.

But again, this is really just because of more applicants. Tech has accepted about the same number per year.

You can see the last 5 years chart here: http://factbook.gatech.edu/admission...igures-charts/

The number of applicants basically doubled just between 2011 and 2015. Not sure about the UGA data but it wouldn't surprise me if their applicants went way up too.

Well, tuition is about $9400 a year and the HOPE will pay about $7000 of that.

Yes, you'll have another couple of thousand in books and fees but for a lifetime investment that isn't so bad.

Well, since pretty much everybody from Georgia attends UGA nearly tuition free ... maybe not

You can see the last 5 years chart here: Georgia Tech | Fact Book Admission Figures – Charts

This data came from ( http://admission.gatech.edu/images/p...rofile_web.pdf ) and ( http://www.oir.uga.edu/eFactbook/FactBook2015.pdf )

Freshman application numbers by year
GaTech UGA
2011 14,124 17,823
2012 14,711 18,735
2013 17,659 20,340
2014 25,872 20,918
2015 27,270 21,945
2016 30,537 ~23,000

So your reasoning holds. More people (since 2013) are actually trying to get in to GaTech than UGA, which is a smaller school. (25,000 vs 36,000). This is news to me. Given the current state of public schools here in Georgia, I would presume that Georgia Tech must be attracting a way larger number of applicants from outside of the state of Georgia.

Tech has published some 2016 Freshmen data - http://admission.gatech.edu/images/p...ofile_2016.pdf - Georgia Tech | Fact Book SAT Scores
GaTech 2016 average composite SAT score - 1449

UGA's 2016 average composite SAT score is 1226

Lol, you clearly didn't go to Tech! AnsleyPark had it right the first time; Georgia Tech might be the preeminent institution of higher learning, but GaTech is *not* a university (a bit of information of which the students and alum must constantly remind the world).

Wait until the post Tech's number. The AJC always posts UGA's stuff first and more of it.

UGA is a great school.
What makes it so great? College is overrated. I think a Community College with a focused program of teaching skills would be of more use to students.
