Hello All,

I am a new homeowner and cannot conform myself with the numerous break ins and some acts of vandalism being imposed in our new community.
We have installed storm door, a brand new all wood front door with steel frame, privacy fence, revamped the alarm system, got guns and range training and purchasing a gun today, installing burglar bars on all downstairs windows and patio door by the end of the week! We are not getting a dog because it requires too much maintenance that we are not able to attend.
Since I have been at home, there are some cars that 'monitor' the area, and people as well. I spotted people walking around at 130 to 2am for no reason.
Anyone has any experience and tips on how to proceed when a community is being targeted as such? Thank you for any words of wisdom...

First I would like to say my thoughts and prayers are with you. Feeling unsafe in your own home is torture. I will be happy to tell you things my neighborhood has done to combat crime.

(1) Meet with your neighbors and start some sort of chat group ASAP. This is a great way to communicate about Break ins or suspicious people.
(2) See if your neighbors are willing to hire an off-duty police officer. I have found that most break ins happen during the day, while people are at work, we have an officer patrolling the neighborhood is different times each day and night.
(3) See if anyone works from home, if so, ask them to stroll around the neighborhood at odd times during the day
(4) Meet you beat officers and start emailing and calling your local Zone.

Again I am so sorry you are going through this.

I saw a story on the news about a rash of burglaries happening in south east ATL and some body who stayed home during the day filmed anything they thought looked suspicious. I'd at least get a really good description on the cars and people. And even though they're probably stolen, I'd take down tag numbers as well just in case. I hope everything works out.

Good suggestions.

Also, one of THESE won't hurt, either (no dog food required).

Just for clarification, where is your community located? I only ask because your thread topic casts a relatively large net in regards to location (if the problem is indeed in regard to solely your housing community). Not sure if this was meant to imply that you are not only experiencing these issues at home, but around SW Fulton in general? Tips to avoid your problems can vary accordingly.

Also, people in your community have to help. In certain communities people WILL NOT help the police. IN my community people call the police all the time. As a result, many of these people are caught. They guys who were filmed breaking in the house in Grant Park, were caught because of an anonymous tip.

When you see people walking around outside looking shady, focus on what they are wearing, Call the police and "Lie" example... Call the police tell them a person is walking around the neighborhood (your street) looking in windows of houses and cars. Or you can tell them you seen the person outside shooting a gun. It doesn't have to be the truth as long as the cops are in the area looking for people. Don't worry about lying either. You'll feel safer after all is said and done.

We have gone through some of this ins So. Dekalb. I've been a firearms owner for some time, but again - having a gun doesn't mean you are comfortable using it. That said - when you see people at 1:30 AM , call the cops. Get them to come through.

More importantly - you need to talk to your neighbors. All of you need to band together. It seems like this is lacking. We did this, even went through the formal Dekalb county neighborhood watch program. We were told over and over by the cops that calling them is taken seriously - lying is not necessary, unless this makes you feel better or something.

What are you going to do with all those guns and storm doors and security if you're not home and your neighbors don't say anything? I'm all for defending yourself, just realize it becomes a community effort here, and these roving packs of burglars will be moving around from hood to hood....

What area community are you talking about. I am looking at homes in the camp creek area and will cut my search short.
